Dear School District Stakeholder:

Our school district has received an appropriation through Senator Betty Little’s office.  This is a one time only source of funding.  The Board of Education has asked me to solicit ideas from all the various shareholders of our District.  I am therefore asking for your help in generating a list of ideas on how this money can be best spent to enhance our communities educational program.  There will be approximately $75,000 for this purpose.  The list of items that is generated may also be used in future budgetary considerations.

Thank you in advance for your input.  Please return your list to the main office at school by November 5, 2004.

Very Truly Yours,

Lawrence C. Patzwald

Interim Superintendent

Outing Club (A.K.A. Adirondack Trekkers) - November ’04 News

Signs of fall…

School has been open for nearly two months...

The leaves have changed color and are beginning to fall from the trees…

The soccer teams are winding up their seasons (and successful they have been!!)…

Mrs. Malerba has begun planning another year of activities for outdoor enthusiasts…

The outing club kick-off event will be Saturday,November 6th. An activity is being planned with a social gathering and informational meeting to follow. More information about such will be announced the week of Oct. 25-29th. Information and permission slips will be distributed in school during that week.

Mrs. Malerba is back and looking forward to sharing some new experiences with you! Presently, she is in the process of making arrangements for some of the more popular outings like skating in Lake Placid, a day of play at St. Lawrence University and a family ski day. GPS (Global Positioning System) activities were also popular last year. Opportunities for those who would like to learn how to use a GPS and also for those who would like more practice using a GPS will be offered again this year. Besides the usual outdoor activities (hike, snowshoe, x-c ski, bike, canoe/kayak) other activities may be possible this year. Ideas include, but are not limited to, an evening broomball game, snow tubing, a moonlight snowshoe, backcountry cooking/baking, etc. Together we can plan an exciting year of adventure! Mrs. Malerba is requesting reasonable suggestions and ideas for other possible activities that may be of interest, by Wednesday, Nov. 3rd. Such may be put in her school mailbox, sent via email to lmalerba@northnet.org, or by calling her at 359-2911. Volunteers to help make the outings possible will also be greatly appreciated!

ORGANIC GARDEN BOUNTIFUL

by Deborah Havas

I hope many of you wandered up to view the gardens this summer.  They did wonderfully and all has been harvested.

The children have enjoyed pulling the carrots and onions and digging the potatoes.  The herbs ( rosemary, parsley, and sage) have been transplanted to pots for inside classroom use this winter.  The carrots, onions, and potatoes will be used in our class curriculum in all grades.

The marigolds were very effective in discouraging wildlife, as was the garlic oil, and are still blossoming.  The nasturtiums provided a tasty but heated treat (leaves and blossoms) for all.  Try some sometime!

We will be readying the gardens for winter and hope to finish the final two beds in the spring.  Yeh!!

News from the Art Department

It is with great pleasure that I write this article as a full time Long Lake faculty member. Many thanks to the members of the school board, community, and our past administrator, Ken Slentz for making a full time art position possible. The full time position now gives high school students interested in art an opportunity to fulfill a sequence in the visual arts. We might be small in numbers, but if you have seen some of the work created by our students, you will notice our students are not small in talent.

Each month, in conjunction with the elementary Morning Program, we will be studying an “Artist of the Month”. September’s artist was Gustav Klimt, known for his love of patterns and shapes. The elementary classes have created trees in his style and an array of giant foil and paper leaves utilizing patterns and all sorts of shapes.

Pablo Picasso’s birthday is in October and he is our artist for that month. November’s artist will be Claude Monet.

In addition to our famous “Artist of the Month”, we will have our own “Artist of the Month” in each of our classes k-5. The criteria needed to achieve this recognition will be based on effort and perseverance throughout the month, behavior, taking pride in one’s work by being neat and showing attention to detail, creativity and originality.

Take a peek inside the art room and you will notice the work of the Painting & Drawing students. They have chosen periods of art, or specific famous paintings that they have replicated on our large cabinets and elsewhere in the art room. There are interpretations of cave paintings, a large Egyptian Sarcophagus, and paintings from Van gogh, Chagall, Matisse, Picasso, and others. Come see!

Seventh grade students have recently completed a project that focuses on the art elements, shape, rhythm and movement. The Eighth graders just recently completed giant oil pastel self-portraits in an Andy Warhol style.

A special request goes out to parents of elementary students. If it is at all possible to send in an old big shirt with your budding artist, it will help eliminate those “OOPS”, when the creativity and paint begins to fly. I will ask the students to bring these home every now and again to be washed. Thank you.

                                                                      Michele Gannon

Quote of the Month: Pyramids, cathedrals and rockets exist not because of geometry theories of structures or thermodynamics, but because they were first a picture-literally a vision- in the minds of those who built them.
