I am pleased to be writing to you today in what will be my first contribution to the Long Lake Central School Newsletter. My name is Kevin Crampton and I am your new Superintendent. I am extremely pleased to be here and look forward to working with our fine staff, students and community for many years to come.
Another school year has ended and I wish you all a safe and happy summer. My wife and I were able to attend the graduation on Saturday night and I was impressed by our students, staff and the nice turnout. As students and families enjoy some time off, we will be busy planning for the next school year while the custodial staff is working hard scrubbing each and every room so we are ready to learn come September. Mr. Patzwald is getting ready to roll out of Long Lake and cruise on to his party boat. We wish him well and I personally thank him for his help and support in my transition to this job.
As I type the new phone system is being installed and should be fully operational by the end of the week. Our phone numbers will remain the same but the service and capabilities will be greatly increased.
I have had the pleasure of meeting many of you, if we haven’t met, please do not hesitate to drop by and say hello.
Have a great summer…..and please…..encourage your children to read and get exercise everyday during the break.
Very Truly Yours,
Kevin Crampton
Superintendent
FAMILY
AND CONSUMER SCIENCE
Another school year
comes to a finish as all grades complete projects and do organic garden
plantings.
Kindergarten children spent the final weeks making nutritious
snacks. Grades 1-2 were immersed in a
literature/cooking unit, reading a book each time they came and then making a
food that had something to do with the story.
Grade 3 students spent their time making and working with bread dough,
learning kneading techniques and the correct way to roll dough out into a
circle. They made butter and then
buttermilk whole wheat biscuits with the resulting buttermilk. They were yummie with homemade butter! Refrigerator clay was a favorite class; each
took home a baggy of clay. Grade 4
students experienced a month of yoga and were amazed at how used their muscles
felt and how relaxed they became. Dealing with stress is a wellness issue we
each have. Grade 4 students are
introduced to yoga as a means of stretching, strengthening and relaxing. They really could feel the difference. Grade
5 completed their stuffed dinosaurs and were anxious to take them home.

Our 7th graders finished the
year with a cooking/ baking unit, making two-layer cakes from scratch along
with the “scratch” icing and cream pies with cooked pudding fillings and
“scratch” crust. Each student made their
own to take home and share with their family. They didn’t even mind
tasting! Wynde Kate Keough provided two
workshops for the Vegetarian Cooking class, one introduced us to Aryuveda and
the other provided us with the experience of making spring rolls. Thank you, Wynde Kate! Libbye Powers, in our Working With Children
class, authored and illustrated a book for children entitled, Animals Have
Feelings Too, which she then introduced and read to kindergarten students. The lesson was GREAT! She finished the course by giving them a
nutrition experience and finally a science lesson where they made pine cone
bird feeders. Nice job, Libbye!
The
Organic Garden is complete with all grades participating in the planting. After last year’s success, we are
anticipating another great fall harvest.
This year we planted carrots, onions, potatoes, pumpkin and butternut
squash. Parsley, sage, rosemary,
calendula, nasturtiums and sunflowers round out the project. What fine cooking
projects we will have!
A
HUGE THANK YOU goes out to community members Vern Javes, Russ Defonce and Gary
Baker for constructing the final parts of the garden design. The beds are now complete; there are seven
areas for plantings. We appreciate the
effort and support from these men. Grade 7 students filled the final beds with
a topsoil/compost mix. Highschool FCS
classes planted the herbs; next year’s
Food Science classes will dehydrate them for use in cooking classes. Wish us luck!
The
spring session of Adult Education Wellness Classes presented by Wynde Kate
Keough has finalized. We all appreciated
the opportunity to stretch, cook, and learn six areas of wellness and how we
are affected by each. We are looking forward
to Wynde Kate’s return next fall to enrich us with six additional areas. Thank you, Wynde Kate!
I wish
everyone a great summer!!
