From the Superintendent:

As I prepare to write this newsletter, winter appears to have returned for the moment, yet I am sure Spring is around the corner.  With this thought in mind I think it is important to remind our residents and voters of the many things that happen in the spring.

This May we will be asking for your support in passing the school budget and approving the resolutions to create reserve funds. Reserve funds are a legal way, endorsed by the state comptroller and SED, for a district to budget money on hand for future expenditures.  We will ask for the voter approval in creating and funding a Repair Reserve Fund (for unanticipated large repairs), a Capital Reserve Fund (for capital projects), and a Bus Purchase Reserve Fund.  By building our reserves we can keep our budget at a steady pace and not experience tremendous peaks and valleys. As always, we are available anytime to answer any and all questions about the budget.

Also this May there will be two board seats up for election. Michelle Hamden’s term expires in 2006 and she will run again.  Brian Farr was appointed town justice last week and while there is a gray area in the law whether a person can serve both positions, Brian has opted to resign from the school board after nine years of dedicated service to concentrate on his new role as town justice. Therefore, his seat will be up for election. His term expires in 2007.  On behalf of the board and the school community I would like to thank Brian for his tireless efforts on the school’s behalf. His experience and knowledge will be missed. We certainly wish Brian the best in his career as town justice.

On Tuesday night we celebrated the fall sports season. For us, it was the two boys basketball teams and the girls basketball team.  While our teams may not have won their respective divisions, they accomplished something far more important.  Alex Smith stayed on the modified team and Stephen Pitcher joined his first ever school team. This allowed us to maintain two boys’ teams without doing a sports merger with another school. While we have had many discussions on joining teams with other schools, this effort signifies the value of the school identity, and its importance to our kids and our parents.  I am proud of each and every student athlete and their commitment to having their own teams.

The girl’s Varsity team also received the league’s good sportsmanship award.  Congratulations to all of them and Coach Farrell.

Now, its time for baseball and softball, Play Ball!

Sincerely,

Kevin Crampton

LIBRARY NEWS

By Sharon Waagner

READING IS STILL POPULAR!

It is interesting to note that despite all the focus on children and computers, games, and television, reading is still a major part of our students’ lives in Long Lake.  While we have not yet completed three quarters of the school year, ten students have already achieved the recommended 25 books a year!  Others are closing in with 18 or more finished.  I would like to send out a special thank you to the parents and other family members who continue to encourage our children to read in their leisure time.

Keep up the great work!

FEBRUARY WINNERS

Each time a student in grades 1 through 6 complete a book they are invited to also complete a book report form and bring it to the library. The titles are entered into their ongoing reading records and their names are entered into a monthly drawing for each book completed.  On the first day of the following month, names are drawn for prizes. The February winners were Hayley McCottery, Madison Miller, and Joao Santos.

PARENTS AS READING PARTNERS UPDATE

Our annual PARP program commenced on March 6 with nearly 100% of our students participating as of this writing. Only two more permission slips have to be returned but I am sure that we will have 100% of our students taking part in this fun program focused on reading. This is a phenomenal participation rate.

Students are recording the amount of time they read each night.  They may read with a partner or sit and read their own book with a parent, older sibling, or other adult nearby. At the end of the week, both the student and the parent sign the page for that week in the PARP booklet.  The booklets are turned in every Monday and the amount of time for that week recorded.

Students then received weekly rewards for their accomplishments. This continues for four weeks.  To spur interest we also include a wide variety of incentives. There are weekly drawings for books, weekly riddles to guess, our annual Family Fun Night, Read-A-Tee Shirt Wednesdays, and much more.

The tee shirt days are fun and are designed to show that reading itself happens in many ways, this being one that makes other people read!  It is fun to see just how creative some students can be when they forget to wear a tee shirt with words!

A complete report on PARP 2006 will be included in the next newsletter.

A very special thank you to all of the parents, teachers and community members who once again helped our Book Fair to be a success!  Because of you, we are able to provide the incentive prizes for our reading programs in the library.

GIRLS’ VARSITY BASKETBALL POST-SEASON UPDATE

The LLCS girls’ varsity received individual and team recognition at the post-season meeting of MVAC South coaches.

Chelsey Wallace was selected as a second team all-star by opposing coaches.  During the season she averaged better than 8 points per game, made 16 three-point baskets, and directed the Laker offense from her point guard position.  Defensively, she played the back end of the team’s 1-3-1 zone to perfection, collecting rebounds and steals to jump-start the fast break.

The opposing coaches also honored the Laker team as a whole for its sportsmanship, voting it to first place for the seventh consecutive year.
