The Superintendent:
The new school
year has started and I am pleased to report all seems to be going very
well. We are excited to see several new
students in our school along with our new teachers, Mrs. Mary Phillips-LeBlanc,
Ms. Raina Stoutenburg, and Mrs. Lauren Walker-Arsenault
.
I am looking forward to starting some evening
classes for adults. I hope to offer
different classes beginning in the middle of October and extending to the
Thanksgiving break. Adult Education classes may be taught by our staff or by
anyone with certain areas of expertise. I encourage members of the community to
submit ideas for a class that is in their particular area of interest. Classes can range from 1 hr to 3 hrs and can
be one night or every night sessions are offered. Please contact me directly at 624-2147 ext.
206 if you have any questions or would like to teach a class.
The fitness center is
open for district residents and can be used Monday through Friday 6:30 AM to
7:45 AM and also Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings from 3-6 PM. This is
open, free of charge, but, please be reminded: shoes worn on the street /
outside are NOT to be worn in the fitness room. It is amazing how much
damage a small amount of dirt can do to our equipment.
I am impressed with the
efforts of our girls that have joined with Indian Lake to play Varsity
Soccer. The commitment to make practices
and games is staggering and it is nice to see our girls contribute to a team that
has won its first two games. The boy’s
varsity is also off to a fine start winning its first game at Newcomb. Watch our weekly activity schedule for home
games.
The district is in the
process of having classwork posted on the school website. The intent is to allow parents to view what
their student is doing in a particular class and to highlight major events for
each class. It is not intended to
replace the student’s responsibility of recording daily assignments in their
school planners that have been provided to each student by the district. Parents should have their password to access
their child’s records’ around the middle of October.
Finally I would also
like to invite community members along with family members to participate in
our upcoming open house. I hope to have
a date set in October and a notice will be sent home with students, it will be
on our weekly activity sheet and it will be posted on the school sign on the
front lawn. Open house is a good time to
meet teachers and see what is going on in our building. This time is not to be confused with parent
conferences, which will be scheduled in November. If you need a parent conference prior to the
scheduled time in November, please call the main office at 624-2221 to make an
appointment.
I look forward to seeing you at our coming
events!
Sincerely,
Kevin O. Crampton

Section 504 is a federal civil rights statute that prohibits
discrimination against persons with disabilities in programs receiving federal
financial assistance. The Act protects
individuals with a disability who:
1.
have
a physical or mental impairment which substantially limits one or more major
life activity (major life activities include self-care, performing manual
tasks, walking, seeing, hearing, speaking, breathing, learning and working);
2.
have
a record of such impairment, or
3.
are
regarded as having such an impairment.
Long Lake
Central School District does not discriminate against persons with disabilities
and provides access to qualified disabled individuals to all of its activities
and programs.
The Act also
obligates school districts to identify, evaluate, and to extend to every
qualified student with a disability residing in the district, a free
appropriate public education, including modifications, accommodations,
specialized instruction or related aids as deemed necessary to meet their
educational needs as adequately as the needs of non-disabled students are
met.
The regulations
for Section 504 as set out in 34 CFR Part 104 provide parents and/or students
with the following rights:
1.
You
have a right to be informed by the school district of your rights under Section
504. The purpose of this notice is to
advise you of your rights.
2.
Your
child has the right to participate in and benefit from public education
programs without discrimination on the basis of disability.
3.
Your
child has the right to a free, appropriate public education in the least
restrictive environment and the right to equal opportunity to participate in
school programs and extracurricular activities.
4.
You
have the right to receive notice a reasonable time before a district evaluates
your child or changes your child’s placement or program.
5.
You
have the right to inspect and review your child’s records, to obtain copies of
those records at a reasonable cost not prohibitive to parent access and the
right to amend the records if inaccurate or misleading.
6.
You
have the right to have educational evaluation and placement decisions made
based on information from a variety of sources and by people familiar with the
needs of the student, the meaning of evaluation data and placement options.
7.
You
have the right to an impartial hearing to resolve disputes, the right to
representation at that hearing and appeal rights as outlined in the district’s
Section 504 Grievance Procedure.
If you believe
your child may have a disability that requires modifications or accommodations
to his or her educational program, please contact the Superintendent at
624-2221.
Guidance News
I will be giving
out information on careers, college research and scholarships during
homeroom. Occasionally packets will be
mailed home to parents directly. For the
most part, I am expecting students to be mainly responsible for following up
when they need to. Upcoming activities
and deadlines will be posted under Long Lake Central School guidance class on www.edline.net. If you have questions and want to contact me
by email, my address is twhite@mail.fehb.org.
Juniors will be
taking the PSAT exam on Wednesday, October 18th in the morning. This is a practice exam for the SAT I
Reasoning Test. Students will receive
scores in critical reading, math and writing skills that will give an idea of
how the student will do on the SAT I and how the student compares to other
students across the country.
Juniors will
take the ASVAB on November 1st in the morning. This is an aptitude test given by the
military to give students information on their skills. The exam is required by anyone considering
joining any branch of the military.
Adirondack
Community College is hosting a College Fair on October 5th in the
evening. This is a great opportunity for
juniors and sophomores to begin their college research.

BOOK FAIR IS COMING!
The Fall Scholastic Book Fair will
arrive at Long Lake Central School in late September. The Fair will open with a special preview day
on Friday, September 29, at 9:30 a.m. Located on the stage, the Fair will be
open until 2:30 p.m. and will also be open from Monday, Oct. 2 through Friday,
Oct. 6 from 9:30 to 2:30 each day.
Students will be invited to visit
the Fair on Preview Day and to make lists of favorite books to take home and
share with their parents. Time will be allotted during the following week for
students to make purchases.
Parents and
community members are invited to visit the Fair each day, including Preview
Day, to make purchases. We will also have Teacher Wish Lists again this year.
This popular event allows teachers to make lists of books which will be useful
in their classrooms. Parents and other visitors may then purchase books from
these lists to present as a gift to the class. In addition, teachers visiting
the Fair with or without students will be eligible for special drawings.
It is not too early to begin
thinking about purchases for giftgiving,
birthdays, holidays and other special events are great occasions for
giving the gift of reading.
Proceeds from
the Scholastic Book Fair are used to purchase books and other items that are
used as prizes for reading incentives throughout the year. Questions regarding
the Book Fair may be directed to Sharon Waagner.

Construction class is looking for a volunteer in our community that would like
a shed built and is willing to purchase the materials needed to complete
it. The class will design and build the
shed per your specifications. Please
keep in mind that the completed shed should be no more than 100 square
feet. This opportunity should provide
substantial savings to the volunteer as well as a great learning opportunity
for our students.

You never really know how a team is going to perform until they get out there and face the competition. I was pretty sure the boys would have the potential this year to compete for the MVAC Southern Division Title, even before the team stepped on the field for the first practice.
If these guys continue to play like they did in the first and second game of the season, my hopes and beliefs have been confirmed. With no scrimmages or games to prep for the first league contest, the Lakers played together and controlled the game for most of the season opener against Minerva / Newcomb and came away with a 7 to 1 win. In an out of division contest against Crown Point on Friday, September 15th, we again controlled the game but were held to a 3 to 3 tie as the goal post denied our offense at least six times.
There
has been a steady improvement in the teams foot and ground passing skills over
the last few years and this season we have a group of athletes that have raised
the bar a few more notches. With a lot of hard work in practice, and
determination on the field this could be the season for the Long Lake Central
School’s boys varsity to finally win its’ first MVAC southern division
championship.
I
would like to thank Mr. Kevin Austin for his help in practices and games. His
knowledge, enthusiasm and rapport with the athletes is not only helping with
keeping the boys on task but also helps
to reinforce a sense of togetherness among the players. Mr. Ted Merrihew is another person who deserves
considerable recognition for his photography and hands on help.
Please
try to come out and support the boy’s efforts this season. They are a fine
bunch of young men with great attitudes and your support will be meaningful to
them.
