Dear District Residents,
Best Wishes on the New Year!
It was nice to see so many of you at our Christmas concerts! Ms. Stoutenburg and all of her students put in considerable time trying to make the best show possible and I think everyone involved should be given a big round of applause. Watch for our school play, “Annabelle Broom, the Unhappy Witch” on March 14 & 15, 2008. It promises to be a great one!
As we settle in for the long winter, keep in mind to watch for our Winter/Spring Adult Education classes. These classes are open to all adult learners, preference is given to local residents first in classes where the number of participants is limited. If you are interested in teaching an adult education class, please contact me directly.
January Regents Exams are January 22, 23, 24 and 25. Please make sure your son/daughter is rested and ready to go on their exam day(s). Students not taking exams are expected to be in school during this week.
The Long Lake Central School Board of Education had a second meeting with the Town of Long Lake Board and we continue to brainstorm ideas aimed at benefitting the school and the community. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend our meetings. If you can’t be in attendance please do not hesitate to send your great ideas along for us to discuss.
Sincerely,
Kevin O. Crampton

We have had many music events in the
months of November and December. In
November there was the CASMA All-County Fall Festival and the Northeast Music
Festival. In December there is the K-6
Concert and the 7-12 Concert. Both of
the November festivals were great! There
was a great sound quality in both All-County Chorus and the Northeast Music
Festival and the students enjoyed both of these festivals. I anticipate wonderful concerts in December
as well! It’s a pleasure to have the
opportunity to teach such talented musicians!
The musical that has been chosen this year
is “Annabelle Broom, the Unhappy Witch”.
It’s a comedy about a witch who is just unable to fit in and be mean
like the other witches. Brynn Speer will be the dramatic director and I will be the
musical director. The musical will be
performed on March 14th and 15th with the times to be
announced.
Schedule
of Upcoming Music Events
December 12th -
Elem. Concert (K-6)
December 18th
– HS Concert (7-12)
February 11th –
Essex Sr. All-County

PTSA
NEWS
This year the Christmas Craft
Fair was held at the Town Hall on Saturday, December 1st with over
10 venders. Once again, the PTSA kept the
venders and shoppers fed with homemade soups, chili, hotdogs, soda, water,
coffee and a wide assortment of baked goods.
Santa Claus, along with his little elves, graced our presence and for a
small donation, shoppers and venders could have their picture taken with the
jolly old elf. Even though the numbers
were down, the PTSA was able to raise $126.25.
Thank you to all the bakers, soup and chili makers, and to those who
donated their time at the Town Hall.
Just a reminder, when you are
going through your coat closet, “Coats for All” is still located in the hallway
outside the fitness center of the school.
Please donate any unwanted coats in good condition.
Look for a PTSA sponsored
event at the upcoming Winter Carnival!!
If you haven’t already paid
for your PTSA membership, please do so as soon as possible. Adults $5 and students
$3.50. Send membership money
to: PO Box 10 Long Lake, NY 12847.
Thanks for your support!!!

Tips for Safe Traveling
By

Like most parents, you
probably have rules for how your children should deal with strangers, which TV
shows, movies, and videos they`re allowed to watch, what stores they`re allowed
to enter, and where and how far from home they`re allowed to travel. It`s
important to make similar rules for your children`s Internet use and to be
aware of their online activities.
You`ll also want to make sure that surfing the Net doesn`t take the
place of homework, social activities, or other important interests. You might
even set an alarm clock or timer if you or your child tend
to lose track of time. This section offers tips for ensuring that your children
have safe, productive, and enjoyable experiences on the Internet.
Interacting with Others on
the Internet
Just as we tell our children
to be wary of strangers they meet, we need to tell them to be wary of strangers
on the Internet. Most people behave reasonably and decently online, but some
are rude, mean, or even criminal. Teach your children that they should:
Limiting Children to
Appropriate Content on the Internet
Even without trying, your
children can come across materials on the Internet that are obscene,
pornographic, violent, hate filled, racist, or offensive in other ways. One
type of material--child pornography--is illegal. You should report it to the
Center for Missing and Exploited Children by calling 1-800-THE LOST (843-5678)
or going to http://www.missingkids.org/.
While other offensive material is not illegal, there are steps you can take to
keep it away from your children and out of your home.
Encouraging Information
Literacy
Show your children how to use
and evaluate information they find on the Internet. Not all online information
is reliable. Some individuals and organizations are very careful about the
accuracy of the information they post, but others are not. Some even mislead on
purpose. Remind your children not to copy online information and claim it`s
their own or copy software unless it is clearly labeled as free.
Help children understand the
nature of commercial information, advertising, and marketing, including who
created it and why it exists. Encourage them to think about why something is
provided and appears in a specific way. Steer your children to noncommercial
sites and other places that don`t sell products specifically to children. It is
important to be aware of the potential risks involved in going online, but it
is also important to keep them in perspective. Common sense and clear
guidelines are the place to start.
These tips were excerpted from Parents Guide to the Internet, a report created by U.S. Department of Education Office of Educational Research and Improvement Office of Educational Technology.

LARRY’S
LOCKER
Thank-you everyone who has contributed
school supplies to Larry’s Locker.
This school supply closet was begun and
continues with donations by our former Interim Superintendent Larry Patzwald. Numerous community members have also contributed.
Students are able to go to Mrs. Seaman and grab pencils, pens, paper,
notebooks, etc. as soon as they need them. Other items such as boots &
sneakers are also available on an as needed basis. Thanks again Larry and to
all who have made Larry’s Locker possible.

The Health and Wellness Committee is
planning the next ‘Family ‘U’ community night to be held on April 18,
2008. We would appreciate your
suggestions for healthy living presenters/presentations or maybe you would like
to do a presentation yourself on a hobby or healthy way of life! We’d love to know what you do to get or stay
healthy. Please contact Gail Seaman with your thoughts and ideas or drop a note
to the school at LLCS, Attn: Gail Seaman, P.O. Box 217, Long Lake, NY 12847. If
you would like to attend the next health and wellness meeting come join us on
January 16, 2008 at 3:00 p.m.

DENIM
DAY DONATION
On November 20, 2007 The National Honor
Society held a denim day to benefit the Long Lake Volunteer Fire
Department. Faculty and staff were
allowed to participate by wearing their favorite pair of jeans and giving a
donation. With the collections from jeans day we donated $87.00 to the Fire
Department. The National Honor Society would like to thank those who
participated in jeans day and in helping to support a local organization.

Scholar Athlete Award
Both our boys and
girls soccer teams qualified for the New York State Public High School Athletic
Association's (NYSPHSAA) Scholar Athlete Award.
To receive this award a minimum of 12 players must be used and they must
have a team average of 90% or higher.
All 20 girls on the soccer team qualified with an average of 90.486 for
the award. On the boys side 16 of the 23
boys qualified to give them a team average of 92.438. The team will receive a
certificate from NYSPHSAA and each player will receive a pin. We hope this is just the start of all our
teams receiving this award this school year.
If each team throughout the school year qualifies for the award the
schools (Long Lake and Indian Lake) would receive a banner for "School of
Distinction" from NYSPHSAA.

6th Grade Holiday Charity Fundraiser
The sixth grade class volunteered at the
Holiday Craft Fair on Saturday, December 1st, to help take photos
with Santa. Those who received a photo
were very generous with their donations to the 6th grade’s
cause. The class raised a total of
$52.32, which they have decided to donate to UNICEF, an organization working to
get food, water, clothing and health care to refugees in Darfur. The 6th grade class has become
concerned with the situation there, and believes that the money they raised for
charity will assist children in Darfur who are less fortunate than they
are. For more information, you can see http://www.unicef.org/infobycountry/sudan.html.
