Dear District Residents:
Our October Board of Education meeting began with a joint meeting with the Long Lake Town Board. We welcomed this opportunity for our boards to meet and begin discussing the possibility of cooperative ventures in the immediate future and in the long term.
We have been very good “neighbors” in the short time I have been here and imagine this has been the case and will continue to be for years to come. We all recognize the importance of joint ventures and the state is also encouraging schools and communities to work together, hopefully with financial incentives included!
We plan to meet again on Monday, November 19, 2007 at the Geiger Arena. All members of the community are invited and encouraged to attend. Our intent is to get positive feedback and to form various committees to study long range plans for the common good.
If you have any questions, please call me directly at 624-2147 or Gregg Wallace at 624-3001.
November is a short month for school days but a very busy month for school business. Please watch the weekly activity sheet for our early go home/sheltering drill. This generally happens right before Thanksgiving recess. Also this year we will be doing a lockdown drill along with our mandated fire drills. It saddens me to think we have to add this procedure to our routine but as I look at the news around us, I know it is a must.
I wish you and all of yours a safe and Happy Thanksgiving.
Sincerely,
Kevin O. Crampton
Superintendent

Guidance News
Seniors
should be finished with remaining campus visits by the end of October
and working steadily on college applications. You can find the schedule
and contact information for just about any open house on any campus by searching
that college online and going into their section on admission for prospective
or undergraduate students. When
considering which colleges to apply to, students should note the level of
selectivity for these colleges and the average high school grade point averages
and college exam scores they are looking to admit. Compare this to your own GPA and test scores
and take into consideration whether you are a good fit for their admission
guidelines. Seniors should aim to apply
to 3-5 schools. In addition to applying
to colleges that will be an academic challenge for you, it would be wise to
consider applying to 1-2 “safety” schools that absolutely meet your academic
profile and financial needs. Make sure
you like your safety schools. Don’t put
a school on your safety list that you don’t want to go to. While I hope you get into your first choice,
there is no guarantee. You need to be able to live with your final
options. Some colleges have a rolling
admissions policy. Under this process,
applications are reviewed as they are received.
These colleges accept applications throughout the year until their class
is full. Students applying to colleges
with rolling admissions should be working on their applications now and sending
them in as soon as possible. This
includes getting copies of the secondary school reports to me and copies of any
recommendation forms to teachers.
Confidential recommendations are more important in the admissions
decision. They believe that if the student doesn't have the
right to see the recommendation, the writer is more likely to be honest about
your abilities. You need to either give the teacher an addressed envelope
to mail the recommendation or have the teacher give the recommendation directly
to Miss White to mail. Our goal is to
have all college applications completed by Christmas break at the latest.
Some colleges may have earlier deadlines, so you need to pay close attention to
all deadlines (admissions & financial) for all of your applications.
Now is
the best time for juniors to be
exploring college options. Juniors just
finishing taking the PSAT were given registration materials for the SAT and ACT
exams in spring 2008. Students should
register for these exams as soon as possible to make sure they get the date and
location that works best. I will be
giving articles to students in homeroom on various aspects of post-graduate
planning and financial aid. Students
should remember that they do not have to choose a specific major right now or
know exactly what they want to do for a career.
Most students change their minds several times in college anyway. The important thing is to find a school that
has several areas of interest for the student and fits their personality and
finances. Spring of the junior year is
the best time to visit potential colleges, but it never hurts to start earlier
if you can. The goal for juniors this
year is to narrow their list of college choices down to five and to visit as
many of those schools as possible before June.
All students can use Career Zone (www.nycareerzone.org) or eDiscover to do college research
on careers, majors, colleges, vocational schools, etc. User codes and
directions for using eDiscover will be given to students in grades 5-12. These
programs give you specific information about occupations, college majors,
schools, internships, apprenticeships and the military. They will allow you to
search in all areas according to characteristics you like or to complete
assessments which help students decide which careers they should look into
based on their interests and skills. There are many college search engines
available on the internet that provide an excellent way to narrow down your
list of colleges or get information about career choices, but these sites are a
great place to start.
Admissions
representatives occasionally visit the Guidance Office in the fall and spring
each year. Any students in the high
school, but particularly juniors and seniors should take these opportunities to
talk directly to someone from the colleges and ask specific questions about
their programs. It also helps if you are
planning on applying to that school, to have someone in the admissions office
familiar with you personally when they are in the process of reviewing your
application and making an admission decision.
Representatives from SUNY Albany, Alfred University, St. Joseph’s
College, SUNY Canton, Fulton Montgomery Community College, SUNY Cobleskill, Herkimer
Community College and North Country Community College have scheduled
appointments for this fall. More
colleges will likely visit in the spring.
