NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY INDUCTEES
Sophomores
ERIK ARSENAULT, FELICIA CORTIS, HANNAH
LAMOS, LYNDSEY SKERRETT AND ALEX SMITH and Junior BETH CONKEY are the new members of National Honor Society at Long
Lake Central School. They will join
David Andrews, Andrew Snide, Alexandria Holton, Leah Lamos and Chelsey Wallace
as members of this Society. Please congratulate these students on their achievement.
Rules
for induction to National Honor Society are as follows.
NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY
SELECTION
Long
Lake Central School participates in the National Honor Society program
sponsored by the National Association of High School Principals. Following is the selection criteria and
procedures followed at LLCS.
1.
The
Guidance Office generates a list of students of grades 10, 11, and 12 after the
first and third marking period. The list
contains the names of students who have achieved a cumulative GPA of 85% or
better. An Incomplete on a report card
may jeopardize your eligibility for National Honor Society.
2.
Eligible
students are asked to complete a questionnaire by a given due date.
Continued
3.
The
list of eligible students is presented to the faculty, who may individually
comment in writing on any, all or none of the students. These comment sheets are presented to the NHS
Membership Selection Committee.
4.
The
Membership Selection Committee consists of five voting faculty members and a
non-voting advisor. Students are rated
in the areas of Character, Service and Leadership. For consistency, the following definitions
are used:
CHARACTER
– Meets responsibilities promptly and thoroughly; demonstrates integrity and
reliability; maintains an attitude of friendliness, stability and a habit of
neatness; is cooperative both in classroom and school functions; sets a good
moral tone by his/her own conduct.
SERVICE
– Renders service, great or small, willingly and responsibly, in and out of
school; helps create a desirable climate by his/her own willingness to support
leaders; shows courtesy and thoughtfulness in assisting visitors, students and
teachers.
LEADERSHIP
– Demonstrates leadership by inspiring others to contribute positively to any
effort in a class, team, organization or school activity; carries out tasks
undertaken effectively and with a minimum of direction by concerned adults;
exemplifies attitudes and qualities which are a silent influence on others for
good.
The
Membership Selection Committee discusses and votes on each candidate based on
the input of all faculty. Voting is done
on behalf of the faculty, not solely on the behalf of the committee
members. The tallies are used by the
Committee to determine which eligible candidates are outstanding in meeting the
criteria for Honor Society. It should be
remembered that selection for the National Honor Society is a privilege, not a
right. There is no process for disagreement
with the committee’s decision provided for in the Constitution and Bylaws of
the NHS. Students or parents interested
in discussing criteria and selection procedures are encouraged to contact the
Advisor, Victoria Snide.

LONG LAKE CENTRAL SCHOOL
DISTRICT PLANNING COMMITTEE
MEETING MINUTES
ü A Distance Learning &
Telemedicine Program Grant was presented for review and potential
application. Mrs. Seaman will be seeking
knowledge from people who have experience in writing grants. Currently there are 3 students using the
distance learning program. Often times classes
can be difficult to follow and perhaps a more interactive program (star-net) would
be better.
ü Short Tuesday was discussed and a
unanimous opinion of Parent, teacher, staff, church group, and student representatives
is that Short Tuesday is highly beneficial as it allows time to meet during the
week without interfering with school time, sports practices etc.
ü Alex Holton briefly reviewed the
Jr./Sr. trip.
ü Discussion took place on the
Washington, Boston trips and when they occur & what classes go.
ü Please review Shared decision
making plan for the June meeting, as this is the final request to do so and the
plan will be finalized.
ü The 7& 8 grades Visit to
Skidmore was very beneficial, the group is anxious to hear of the details of
the FES trip.
ü Next meeting date is June 7, 2007
@ 7:00 a.m. in room 316.

The
recipients of this year’s Valedictorian and Salutatorian senior awards are
Alexandria Holton and Leah Lamos. Alex
plans on attending St. Lawrence University to pursue a liberal arts
degree. Alex has received previous
awards including the St. Lawrence University Augsbury Scholarship, the Clarkson
University High School Leadership Award, the University of Rochester Frederick
Douglass and Susan B. Anthony Award in Humanities and Social Sciences, the
Wells College 21st Century Leadership Award, the Elmira College Key Award,
membership in National Honor Society and high honor roll. Her extracurricular activities have included
soccer, basketball, student council, class president, the District Planning
Committee, band, choir and several music festivals and school plays throughout
her high school career. Alex also
attended the St. Lawrence Young Writer’s Conference in 2005. Leah is unsure about her future plans at this
point.
She
is a member of the National Honor Society and is frequently on the high honor
roll. Her extracurricular activities
have included soccer, basketball, softball, band, choir, student council and
several music festivals and school plays.
Leah is an avid art and music student and is very well traveled, having
been to the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Poland, Germany, Switzerland, Austria,
the Czech Republic, Argentina, Uruguay and New Zealand. Congratulations to both
students for their years of hard work.
Several of the juniors have been
exploring college options and taking the opportunity to begin visiting
colleges. I cannot stress enough the
importance of college visits! Colleges
look very good in their publications because they work hard to do so. In order to get the best fit, students need
to tour the campus, meet with an admissions counselor and a financial aid
counselor, meet with professors and/or students from their interested
departments, eat on campus and ideally even spend a night there. The goal for juniors this spring is to narrow
their list of college choices down to three to five schools and to visit as
many of those schools as possible. They
will need to begin working on applications very soon after school starts in
September.
There are many wonderful articles
and resources available to parents at www.collegeboard.com. Please check out the website when you can.
Students
in grades 8-11 have met with me to discuss possible course selections for next
year, to review graduation requirements and to discuss post-graduate
plans. A summary of that discussion has
been mailed home to parents along with a post graduate planning activity list
for next year. Student schedules will be
mailed home over the summer when the master schedule is completed.
Summer
programs for exploring academic programs or building sports skills are
available at various colleges every year.
These are excellent opportunities for kids to stretch their skills, meet
new friends and explore college options.
For instance, Alfred University has programs for high school students in
Astronomy, Business, Creative Writing and Swimming available at www.alfred.edu/summer. Carnegie Mellon has a junior/senior summer
academy for fine arts, architecture, art, design, drama and music, www.cmu.edu.
Ithaca Summer College for High School Students has courses in Acting,
Media and Politics, Journalism, Business, Photography, among others.
www.ithaca.edu/summercollege. Junior Statesmen Summer School
is offered for 9-11th grade students interested in politics and current
events. This program is run on the
campuses of Georgetown, Princeton, Yale, Stanford and Northwestern. Students can access program and application
materials at www.jsa.org/summer. If colleges have summer programs, they can
usually be accessed on the college’s home internet page.
There
is an excellent resource online at www.kidscamps.com
for summer camps in many different locations and interest areas including
sports, fine arts, academics, self improvement and special needs. Camps Colby, DeBruce, Rushford, Long Point
and Sacandaga are available in the near vicinity for students ages 8-19. The guidance office generally receives
mailings for summer applications each year.
If you are interested, please contact me and I’ll send you an
application.
