Dear District Residents:

I am pleased to share with you the proposed Long Lake Central School District budget for the 2008–2009 projects a decrease of 2.3% over last year.

Using the most recent assessments given to us, the projected 2008-2009 tax rate will be $5.7392 compared to the 2007–2008 tax rate of $6.5652.  If your property is currently assessed for $100,000 and remains at that level your taxes will decrease by $82.60.

Included in this budget is the continuation of the district preventive maintenance program.  This year’s projects include a continuation of the voter approved heating and ventilation project.  Last summer we completed the HVAC units in the newer (1958) wing on the second and third floors.   The new systems really work well and they replace systems that are 50 years old and whose parts have become obsolete.

This summer we will be completing the fresh air ventilation in the gym and next year we anticipate starting a plumbing project to replace old cast iron pipe and outdated plumbing fixtures.

Our board of education has been diligent in monitoring all income and expenses. The majority of increases are tied to contractual obligations.  Some increases are harder to project and often can not be figured into the budget until the last moment.  These are costs that we all experience personally, such as health insurance, retirement system contributions and energy costs.  As we all know, these costs always increase and never seem to decrease.

Our budget hearing is Tuesday, May 13, 2008 @ 7:00 PM in the school gym.  The monthly meeting will begin at 6:30 PM and recess for the budget hearing then reconvene at the end of the budget presentation.  The budget vote is May 20, 2008 in the cafeteria from 2PM – 8 PM.

I look forward to seeing you there.

Very Truly Yours,

Kevin O. Crampton

Superintendent

2008 Peacemaker Award

Given in Memory of Will Geiger (1990 - 2003)

By the Long Lake Parent-Teacher-Student Association

The Long Lake Parent-Teacher-Student Association (PTSA) has established an annual Peacemaker Award in memory of student Will Geiger.  This award honors the qualities of kindness, fairness, politeness, and other characteristics which make us decent human beings.  These  qualities may be taken for granted or go quietly unsung.  The Peacemaker Award is presented to a Long Lake Central School student in grades 7 -12 who exemplifies some of the personal qualities and strength of character for which Will is so dearly remembered.

The PTSA is calling for nominations of candidates for the Peacemaker Award.  Nominations of a 7th – 12th grade LLCS student may be made by a LLCS faculty member, staff person, student in grades 7 -12 or parent; as well as by a community member.  Nominations must be made in writing on the form supplied (see other side); anonymous nominations will not be accepted.

A Review Committee considers each nomination.  This committee consists of the PTSA Executive Committee, as well as a representative from the LLCS Student Council, LLCS Faculty, LLCS Administration, and LLCS School Board.  The final decision will be made by the PTSA Executive Committee.  Nominations are kept confidential.

The recipient of the Peacemaker Award will be honored at an awards ceremony at the end of the school year.  A plaque with the names and year of each award recipient is on display in the school building.

Nominations for the 2008 Peacemaker Award must be received in the PTSA mailbox (in the LLCS Main Office), in a sealed envelope, no later than 4 p.m. on Friday, May 16.

Kindergarten Poems

In honor of National Poetry Month, Betsy Comeau has been working with the Kindergarteners writing poems.  She and the students brainstorm ideas and words then write the poem together and read it together.

We have written Acrostic poems for our names as well as descriptive poems about the Ocean.

Here are two poems that the Kindergarteners wrote with Mrs. Comeau about the  Ocean.

WAVES                                                          Whales

Waves can be wavey                                                     Whales are humungous

Waves can crash on the shore,                                      Whales live down deep,

Waves can be tall                                                         I wonder if they ever sleep.

Or salty and small
