Music

Theory I (Elements of Musical Structure), 1/2 unit

Objectives:

  1. To fulfill a primary prerequisite toward development of skills in composing, arranging, harmonizing and improvising music.
  2. To acquire full understanding of basic rules and principles involved in using language of music.

 

Activities:
  1. Aural and visual analization and dictation
  2. Performance and sign reading
  3. A synthesis of above - composition

Content:

                Staffs and clefs; scales and key signatures; time values; rhythmic patterns; terminology; melody; intervals; cadences; chord; form; non-harmonic tones.

Theory II (Harmony and Elementary Counterpoint), 1/2 unit

Objective:

                Further development of Theory I.

Activities:

  1. Aural and visual analization
  2. Performance
  3. Writing

Content:

  1. Further investigation and review of Theory I principles.
  2. Modulation to closely related keys
  3. Alto and tenor clefs; mixed meter; melodic contour; modal scales; identification of form; harmonic background and progression; 2 and 3 part writing; conducting; orchestration

Music History and Appreciation, 1 unit

Objectives:

  1. To perpetuate an enjoyment of music that will carry over into adult life.
  2. To become aware of music as a cultural heritage and to cultivate a taste for it’s various styles and forms.
  3. To make listening a more meaningful, relevant and satisfying activity by developing a historical dimension and orientation in music.

Activities & Content:

  1. Study of historical periods of music from ancient to 20th century using listening and visual analyzation.
  2. Create ability to identify general as well as specific thematic material; instrumentation and voicing; tonalities and atonalities, compositional devices and form; terms and basic musical elements.
  3. Score Reading - the following and conducting of notation and texts of various forms of music.
