Social Studies

Social Studies 9 (Global Studies I), 1 credit

                This course is part I in a two-part course that is state tested at the end of the tenth grade.  Part I covers Latin America, Africa, South Asia, East Asia and Southeast Asia.  Each unit deals with the historical/physical settings, the dynamics of change, and economic development.  At the end of this course a school final exam is administered.

Social Studies 10 (Global Studies II), 1 credit

                This is part II of the course begun in ninth grade.  This year covers the Middle East, Russia and Europe.  Again each unit is divided into a study of the historical/physical setting, the dynamics of change and economic development.  This year also includes a study of the world today including recent changes to the world map.  At the end of the year students take the New York State Regents.

Social Studies 11 (United States History and Government), 1 credit

                This course focuses on a chronological study of American history as it pertains to Constitutional change and development.  The primary units of focus are: Constitutional Foundations, Industrialization, the Progressive Era, Prosperity, Depression and War, Age of Global Crisis and The World in Uncertain Times.  At the end of the course, students take the New York States Regents.

Social Studies 12, (Economics), 1/2 credit

                This course is designed to give the student an overall introduction to economic theory and the ways in which an understanding of economics is essential to effective citizenship.  The course includes an introduction to the basics of economic theory, a study of microeconomics including the consumer and the firm and finally a look at the macroeconomic topics of money, unemployment, inflation and economic growth.  A school exam is administered at the end of the course.

Social Studies 12 (Participation in Government), 1/2 credit

                This course is designed to help foster and encourage responsible citizenship.  The course focus is on the study of public policy.  A study is made of the nature of public policy in which current public policy is researched and analyzed.  Students then are ready to research and write their own public policy paper in conjunction with their English class.  Finally, a study of the court system and public policy is made through participation in a mock trial.  A school exam is administered at the end of the course.
