Welcome to Mrs. Furlong's 3rd through 6th Grade Math Site!
I'm so glad you've decided to click on by. Please explore the math resources! My goal is for students to understand the reason we need math in our lives, have them appreciate and enjoy math, and be critical thinkers and problem solvers. We are on our way!
A little about me...I have worked in the field of education for a long time. I never thought I wanted to be a teacher, but when I got my first degree in Wildlife Biology, I thought it would be neat to teach others about nature and science. I was a science and math teacher for 5th and 6th graders in NH for about ten years. I then went on to become a mathematics instructional coach, an assistant principal, and a principal.
We have been coming to Long Lake (our "happy place") for over 20 years. When the position came open for 3-6 grade math I knew I had to apply. And boy am I glad I did! We are now calling Long Lake our home.

What's going on in the classroom?
This year LLCSD adopted Eureka Math, based on Engage NY. We are almost through the first module in each grade and this math is rigorous and is making our students really think and become problem solvers. Our third graders are working on learning multiplication and breaking down facts using the distributive property. Fourth grade has worked on using the standard algorithms for addition and subtraction to solve word problems. Fifth graders are learning place value including decimals. They have practiced multiplying and dividing decimals using area models and the standard algorithm. The sixth graders are learning about ratios and rates and are currently solving problems using graphs, equations, and rate tables.
All students have the option of working on math outside of the classroom too. There are some excellent games and websites to boost student understanding of math concepts. Please check out the links for more detail.
