English Language Arts (E.L.A.)

Our E.L.A. curriculum nurtures and builds the love and foundation of reading. Each unit of study includes a piece of literature across genres that also incorporates science and social study content. We will focus on text-based comprehension, reading for understanding, content knowledge, writing, spelling and vocabulary skills.

Science

The science curriculum is guided by the Next Generation standards.  At the end of 5th grade there is a N.Y.S. science test. There are 4 investigations/labs that are required for the N.Y.S. test. To complete the labs I collaborate with Mrs. Delehanty to complete all required investigations. Our 5 units of study include: Ecosystems and the Food Web; Water Cycle and Earth's Systems; Earth and Space Patterns; Stars and Planets; Chemical Reactions and Property of Matter.

Social Studies

Studies Weekly is a N.Y.S. standards based curriculum. It includes original articles, photos, illustrations, and designs. Included with the program there are also E.L.A. based activities, formative and summative assessments that are aligned with the Standards and deconstructed skills. The topics we discuss include: the Inquiry Model; Geography and Culture of the Western Hemisphere; Early People in the Americas; Ancient Civilizations of the Americas; Age of Encounters; Political Systems of the Western Hemisphere; Economics in the Western Hemisphere.
